Depart Addis Ababa
We begin our journey heading north from Addis Ababa, passing through the Ethiopian highlands. Along the way, you'll enjoy stunning views of rural villages and the traditional lifestyle of the local people. The drive offers a real sense of Ethiopia's scenic beauty and cultural depth.

Jemma River Gorge Viewpoint & Birdwatching Stop
Before reaching Debre Libanos, we stop at the dramatic 1,000-meter-deep Jemma River Gorge. From the viewpoint, you'll enjoy panoramic views and a refreshing breeze. This is also a great opportunity for birdwatching—look out for lammergeiers, vultures, and other highland raptors soaring over the cliffs.

Guided Hike: Portuguese Bridge, Waterfall & Caves
Start a moderate 1.5 to 2-hour guided hike. You'll cross the historic Portuguese Bridge, believed to have been built centuries ago for trade. The trail continues to a terraced waterfall hidden in the cliffs. Watch for gelada monkeys and hear the rush of water echoing in the gorge. The area also contains small natural caves that are occasionally inhabited by wildlife or used as resting shelters by shepherds.

Traditional Lunch Break
After your hike, we stop for lunch at a scenic local restaurant or picnic site with views of the surrounding highlands. Enjoy traditional Ethiopian dishes like injera with shiro or tibs, along with local beer or fresh juice.

Debre Libanos Monastery Visit
In the afternoon, visit the famous Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. The original site was destroyed during the Italian occupation in 1937, but the rebuilt octagonal church remains a spiritual center for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Admire the colorful stained-glass windows created by the legendary artist Afework Tekle, who also designed windows for Africa Hall in Addis Ababa.
Visit the newly built monastery museum, where centuries-old religious manuscripts, crowns, robes, and ceremonial items are on display. If time permits, you may have a chance to meet local monks or clergy and learn about the site's spiritual significance.

Depart for Addis Ababa
After a full day of hiking, sightseeing, and reflection, we begin our drive back to Addis Ababa. Arrival expected by early evening (around 7:00 PM), with drop-off at your hotel or a designated location.
